Antibioticoterapia en oftalmología / Antimicrobial therapy in ophthalmology

El uso adecuado de los antimicrobianos se ha convertido en un asunto de urgencia hoy en día, debido fundamentalmente al fenómeno de la resistencia bacteriana. Con el objetivo de contribuir a elevar y actualizar el conocimiento sobre el empleo de estos fármacos contra las infecciones oculares, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica al respecto, donde se relacionan las sepsis y los microorganismos que suelen afectar el globo ocular, así como se exponen otros aspectos no menos importantes sobre presentación, vías de administración, mecanismos de acción y concentración de antibióticos.

The appropriate use of antimicrobians has become an emergency matter nowadays, mainly due to the phenomenon of bacterial resistance. With the objective of contributing to increase and update the knowledge on the use of these drugs against the eye infections a literature review on this respect was carried out, in which sepsis and organisms that usually affect the eyeball are related. Other last but not least aspects as occurrence, administration routes, action mechanisms and concentration of antibiotics are also exposed.

Algunas consideraciones actuales sobre la diagnosis del agujero macular idiopático / Some current considerations on the diagnosis of the idiopathic macular hole

El agujero macular idiopático constituye la causa más frecuente de consulta oftalmológica por disminución lenta y progresiva de la visión central. La introducción de nuevas tecnologías, como la tomografía de coherencia óptica, la microperimetría y los estudios de autofluorescencia permiten conocer mejor esta enfermedad y posibilitan no solo una mayor recuperación morfológica y funcional de los pacientes intervenidos quirúrgicamente, sino el seguimiento clínico del ojo contralateral. Se realizó una revisión exhaustiva de la bibliografía biomédica sobre el tema con vistas a crear un importante material de consulta para especialistas y personal en formación acerca de esta alteración ocular y poder valorar más rigurosamente a las personas dañadas por sus efectos.

The idiopathic macular hole constitutes the most frequent cause of visit to the ophthalmological department due to a slow and progressive decrease of the central vision. The introduction of new technologies, as the optical coherence tomography, the microperimetry and the self fluorescence studies allow to know better this disease and they not only facilitate a greater morphological and functional recovery of the patients surgically treated, but also the clinical follow up of the contralateral eye. An exhaustive review of the biomedical literature on the topic was carried out aimed at creating an important study material for specialists and training personal about this eye alteration and to be able to evaluate more rigorously patients damaged by its effects.

Eficacia de la ozonoterapia en la degeneración macular seca asociada a la edad / Effectiveness of the ozone therapy in dry macular degeneration associated with the age

Introducción: El origen de la degeneración macular seca asociada a la edad, es aún incierto. Objetivo: Determinar la eficacia de la ozonoterapia en pacientes con esta alteración. Métodos: Se realizó una intervención terapéutica en afectados por ese proceso patológico, atendidos en la consulta de retina del Centro Oftalmológico del Hospital General Docente Dr Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso de Santiago de Cuba, desde enero de 2008 hasta igual mes de 2009. Los integrantes de la casuística fueron asignados a uno de 2 grupos: los tratados con ozono y los que recibieron comprimidos de nutriforte. Resultados: Predominaron el sexo femenino y la edad promedio de 65 años. En el primer grupo, la agudeza visual de 0,51 pasó a ser de 0,63 después del tratamiento; y en el segundo, de 0,47 a 0,5, con mejoría de la sensibilidad retinal en ambos casos. Conclusiones: El procedimiento ozonoterápico fue eficaz para tratar a personas con daño degenerativo de la mácula.

Introduction: The origin of the dry macular degeneration associated with the age is still uncertain. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the ozone therapy in patients with this condition. Methods: A therapeutic intervention was carried out in those affected by that disease, attended in the Retina Department of the Ophthalmology Center of Dr Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from January 2008 to January 2009. Cases were divided into two groups: those treated with ozone and those that received Nutriforte tablets. Results: The female sex and mean age of 65 years prevailed. In the first group the visual acuity of 0,51 became 0,63 after treatment, and in the second group it was 0,47 to 0,5 with improved retinal sensibility in both cases. Conclusions: Ozone therapy was effective to treat people with macular degeneration.

Uso y abuso del ciprofloxacino / Ciprofloxacin use and overuse

Las quinolonas son antibacterianos eficaces contra gérmenes gramnegativos y especialmente útiles para eliminar infecciones de las vías urinarias u otras localizaciones, así como también para tratar a pacientes con enfermedades de transmisión sexual. Al respecto se realizó un estudio sobre el uso y abuso del ciprofloxacino, por constituir un antimicrobiano comúnmente utilizado de forma inadecuada e indiscriminada.

Quinolones are effective antibacterials against gram-negative germs. In addition, they are especially useful to eliminate infections of the urine ducts and other regions, as well as to treat patients with sexually transmitted diseases. A study about the ciprofloxacin use and overuse was carried out because it is an antimicrobial which is commonly used in an inappropriately and indiscriminately way.
